Pet Food Drive Success
7000 pounds collected
Sadly, across the state family pets are being surrendered to local shelters and animal rescues as a result of hard economic times. In October, a group of concerned citizens came together to form the "Don't Forget the Pets" coalition and together they held the 1st Annual "Don't Forget the Pets" Pet Food Drive. On October 4th and 5th the drives were staged across the state to collect and distribute the much needed pet food to local food banks and pantries. The operation was a huge success.
Collections were held in various cities including Brigham City, Vernal, Tooele, Park City and several cities along the Wasatch Front. So far, the areas holding the drives report an amazing 7,000 lbs of pet food collected and delivered to local food pantries. Ogden alone raised nearly 1500 lbs.
The goal of the pet food drive is to keep pets in their homes by helping provide the food they need during these tough times. Food was given to the various food banks and pantries around the state where families in need can go to receive help feeding their pets. Anyone in need of pet food assistance can dial 2-1-1 and ask where their local food pantry is located.
This was the first year for the pet food drive and the plan is for efforts to continue and expand throughout the year. Please "Don't Forget the Pets" and consider giving a pet food donation with your regular donation to your local food bank or pantry.
